Here it is :)

Author: Heather Weller Published on: July 16, 2001 http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm...acy_new/74940/3You've just delivered a surrogate baby, what are you going to do? If you answered you're going to Disneyland, perhaps you should postpone that a month or so. Chances are you're going into that amusement park thrill ride all its own: post partum mood swings.I've read many surrogate birth stories over the past two years, and they're all wonderful to read. But some have stuck out for their honesty in dealing with the emotional aspects of the time after the birth. And those that have shared a common theme: it's not all happy all the time.I think this is an important message to get out there to those in the world of surrogacy who haven't been through a birth yet: either as a surrogate or as an intended parent (IP). Many birth stories I read (by surrogates; I've read a few by the new parents themselves, but not as frequently. Hard as it is to believe, it seems they have something else to concentrate on ) would describe the amazing moment when the child was born and handed to the IPs, and how seeing how happy that made them made the surrogate feel an amazing surge of peace and pride for doing this amazing thing. Very few of these birth stories mentioned the down time that follows for MANY surrogates. It seems in part to avoid scaring others, and in part to avoid having others think they are "regretting their decision" or "want to keep the baby," many surrogates don't mention or downplay the sadness they experience after the delivery. And while I'm sure there are some surrogates out there who never have a single pang of sadness, that would seem to be a highly unlikely scenario. Though not for the reasons many outsiders initially assume. In today's society, if you mention surrogacy, people often still think instantly of Mary Beth Whitehead (15 years later!). One of the main questions surrogates are asked is "how can you be sure you can give up the baby?" That is what everyone focuses on. And many surrogates report feeling totally "watched" in the days and weeks following delivery, as those around them - especially those who were skeptical about the whole surrogacy thing to begin with - wait for them to fall apart and realize they made a huge mistake and they want that baby back. They feel the only way to avoid having to explain and justify any sadness is to deny any has occurred. But would it not be normal to be sad at the end of a surrogacy? I equate it to being involved in a play: for weeks or months you rehearse, you submerge yourself in a role, as the time for opening night nears your life tends to become more and more focused on this event, and then you have that wonderful shining moment on the stage, everything goes off wonderfully, the audience loves it, you couldn't have been better. And. Then. It's. Over. With a surrogacy, you've dedicated at the very least nearly a year to helping someone else be a parent when the delivery comes. And with very few exceptions, I've always heard the moment of seeing the IPs with their new child as being the highest high a surrogate can experience. But after that, where is there to go but down?Add that to the totally normal hormonal mood fluctuations following any birth and you have a woman ready to cry. Those who've described the downtime most vividly often talk of feeling totally elated one moment and devastated shortly after because their part in this is done. It's not the baby they miss - that is something everyone is emphatic about because of common perception - it's either the surrogacy itself or the IPs or the "specialness" of being pregnant, or simply the hormones going for a joy ride. And it's completely normal, if not often discussed.I think it's important that surrogates know this so that when the time comes, they know they're not the only surrogate who's ever cried when the baby left the hospital, or when they said goodbye to their IPs, or alone at night afraid to let anyone see them. I also think it's essential for IPs to be aware of this, because as almost any parent can tell you, it's very easy to become totally myopic when you bring home that child for the first time. Besides the rigors of adjusting to an infant's schedule, the whole process of adjusting to being a family leaves little energy or attention to other details. For IPs who've been trying to years to have a child then turn to surrogacy - or even just those who came to surrogacy initially as a way to conceive - the end of the surrogacy is not an end at all, but merely the beginning of their dreams. As natural as that is, the IPs should remember this is the end of the surrogate's role and dream. As easy as it is to get swept away in the day-to-day minute-to-minute minutiae of new parenthood, it is important to remember the person who brought you to this point of obsession! Many IPs speak of wanting to make a "clean break" and simply be a new family, and worry that keeping the surrogate involved in their lives will be more difficult for everyone. (Of course, the amount of contact after the birth one desires differs greatly from case to case - and is something everyone should discuss early and often.) But of the surrogates I know who had the easiest return to being "a woman who once was a surrogate" versus being "a former surrogate who wonders exactly how XXX is doing" were those who had some input from the IPs as they made the adjustment to being a family, who were allowed some time to say goodbye to the baby they carried in the hospital (often in private - something that scares a lot of IPs, unfortunately), and who felt appreciated for their role in making their IPs family a reality. It's this bit of extra hand-holding that actually often turns out to be a big source of closure. For me, knowing that I almost certainly will have periods of being upset or sad after giving birth has been helpful, in that I know I can prepare my friends and family for it so they don't instantly worry too much about my decision just because I have a period of "baby blues" even without having a baby around. It also has prepared me for it, so I won't fear that I'm starting down the fateful path Mary Beth Whitehead did simply because I'm not 100% happy all the time following the delivery. And if I'm lucky, the parent of the baby I carry will be able to provide reassurance that I'm not simply thrown to the curb like hired help once the job is done if I need it. This may not be the most fun or glamorous part of surrogacy to discuss, but I truly think it's an essential one.

OK so now what??

I think some people were expecting me to have a mental break down over this..but I can honestly say that I am doing great! Don't get me wrong I was expecting to have some "blue" days myself with those damn hormones in play and I have had a few moments but not really having to do with the surrogacy itself. I started cying on the Friday after I got home because Liam told me that I was mean (I would not let him have candy before dinner or something..) and ofcourse I get emotional over what I have actually done here.. I guess you would have had to be there when my IP's saw their precious baby girl the first time, or when they fed her for the first time etc etc..it was truly a miracle to witness. The instant love they had for her..I know I have been there with Liam and Emma but to actually see another couple go through it with their own baby! First of all most people are not in the birthing room with a couple (other than medical people) to see that - now obviously they had no choice here but I feel I was blessed to see this. To know that I helped make this happen...WOW!!

Baby is doing wonderfully - Cliff and I went up to visit a week ago and they are all doing great! I am sure now they have gotten into some type of routine.

So now what?? That is what I am suffering from.. what the hell do I do now? What just took place in the last year was HUGE..how do you go back to being normal? To no longer being a surrogate? I was prepared for dealing with the emotions of everything. I have spent years reading about this and then just spent the last year communicating with other surro's and seeing how they dealt with everything in their journies. That is probably why this has been so easy on me..there is one article in particular that I will post right after this that may explain how I am feeling now. I re-read it often just so I know I am not mental!

As for doing another journey?? I don't know..well I do know..if this couple asked me I would do it again in a second. I am hesitant about working with others..I have been so blessed with this couple. They are so easy going and it is just comfortable to be with them. So I guess only time will tell? I am not saying I would not work with another couple..just I am more weary.. but I will take lots of time (often surros get back on journey very quickly..within 2-3 months) but I want to take some time to lose LOTs of weight so if I do decide to do this again that I am in top shape!

So I guess that is it. I don't want to put the baby's name in here as it is not completely private but if you want to know just send me an e-mail!

She is here!!

I know most of you know by now - if you want to read all about the long day and night then continue on..

I woke up at 5:30 am on November 9th to a gush of fluid. Cliff, Liam, Bella (our new kitten) and I were all in the bed together. I said "Oh shit" and Cliff sort of got panicked (he thought I rolled over on the kitten) and then I told him I thought my water had broke. He said "you are kidding right??" I said "well either that or I just peed myself!!" So I got up and more and more fluid kept coming out and I knew for sure it wasn't me peeing!!! LOL.. So I called my IP's and IF answered and hung up on me (his battery died on the cordless) so I am sitting there staring at the phone going now what?? LOL.. So I called back and got their fax machine! Not exactly how I thought this moment would go in my mind!! So I tried again and IM answered all concerned asking if everything was ok.. so I said "well yes except my water just broke" She responded with "Oh shit!!" I told her I was calling the hospital to see what to do and I would call her back. So I called the hospital and they just told me to come in to make sure.. so I called them back and said we were going in but I was not having contractions or anything yet so they had some time..little did we know how much time they would actually have.

I called my parents and Shirley (my stepmother) came over to watch the kids. Dad was the one that answered and when Shirley asked him what was going on he told her "Karen's water just broke" she replied with "in the kitchen or bathroom?" LMAO she thought I was having plumbing problems! I did not pack my bag or anything we just went. We got there at about 7:00 ish and were put in a room. Meanwhile every move I made I just "gushed" everywhere. When we got there we explained to the nurse on duty the situation and if a couple walked in with panicked faces but the wife did not look pregnant..send them to us..LOL!

IP's showed up about an hour later and they decided to put us into the biggest room. My Dr showed up around 10:00. I had been being monitored and there were no contractions at all, baby was still very high and I was about 1 cm dialated. Dr. decided that I was not going to labour on my own with baby so high so we started the Syncote (Pitocin I guess) she assumed once it got started that she would be back in a few hours to deliver..WRONG!! Nothing was happening at all..they just kept upping and upping the pitocin little by little and there was no change!! The whole day went on and we just sat around and chatted all day long. They were also giving me antibiotics as well due to the fact that the baby was going to be a wee bit early. So the night started to go on as well and they checked me once in a while and no change and baby was still high!!! I started having a few irregular contractions at 10:00 pm or so but still nothing to write home about. The nurses had all been great with us all day long.

The Dr had given us until about 11:30pm and if there was still no change then we would have to look at the possibility of a c-section. The baby was not coming down so obviously my cervix was not softening or dialating! I walked around a bit after a potty break and one nurse tried to convince me to go on the birthing ball!! I was like no freaking way..I am such a klutz I would probably fall off and cut my head open or something. So she brought it in anyways and IF tested it out..LOL.. I think he will be buying one for everyone in his office for Xmas he quite enjoyed it. When we hit 11:30 I was having contractions but they were not that strong. They convinced me to go into the birthing tub for a bit in the hopes that after that I would have some change (the baby was a bit lower but still no where close and the cervix was a bit softer) my back was really hurting though (oh and at this point the syncote stuff was at the max 120 double strength!!) She said perphaps there would be enough change that I could have an epidural afterwards but I was worried that it could stop any progress we had made which was not much!My Dr. is not into doing c-sections unless baby is real distress and she was sailing through all of this. Then like at midnight as they were running the tub for me..the contractions started to get stronger and I started violently throwing up..it lasted about 10 minutes. Hurling and contractions DO NOT go together!! They had another nurse come in (shift change) and I had gone from 1cm to 5cm just with the hurling!! Cliff and my IP's were great during the hurling episode. Cliff went to get some coffee and all of a sudden I was allowed to get the epidural. The contractions were pretty intense by this point . So much for the tub..lol..I think I started vomiting because I was so scared to get a c-section and all the nurses swore that is what got everything started! The epi man came down and IF offered me a foot massage and apparently I gave him a very adamant NO! LOL.. we all laughed! IF stayed with me and held me during the epi cause IM would have passed out for sure. They got all ready and the epi man took his damn sweet time putting the stupid thing in. Something to do with not finding the right place at first. I think it was all in around 12:45 or so. He told me that it would take about 10 min to kick in. He waited around and they took my BP a few times and the contractions were coming about 3 min apart and the epi was not kicking in! At about 1:00 am they were too intense and I felt like I had to push. the nurse checked me again and the baby's head was right there and I was ready to go! But the Dr. was not there yet! She only lives across the street so they called her and told me she would be here in 10 minutes. I kept telling them we did not have 10 minutes...LOL. They got all set up and she walked in and I instantly calmed down..(she has that affect) but told her I really needed to push. She told me she was going to wash her hands and if I felt like I wanted to push to go ahead. So I did..she came back and the baby's head was right there. She told me to push again on my next contraction but the contraction never really came so she told me to push anyways. I did and in two pushes she was out. It was so easy to get her out I was sure she must have weighed like 5-6 lbs. The epi only kicked in a bit afterwards when the Dr. was delivering the placenta..so much for that epi!!!IP's had been up by my head and had been letting Cliff take all the beating from me..lol. They came right down to check her out and IF cut the cord. They went over with the nurses and all decided that she was quite big for being 3 1/2 weeks early! Cliff stayed with me and the Dr. proceeded with checking me out and delivering placenta. There was somethign wrong with the placenta..cannot remember what it was called perhaps someone might know..something about the cord being attached to the blood vessels?? Anyhoo the Dr. seemed to think it was better she came early because of this. Placenta was delivered and it was confirmed there was no tearing or anything. They weighed the baby and she was 7lbs 3 1/2 ounces and 20 3/4 inches! She was born on the 10th at 1:32 am. We stayed in the birthing room for quite awhile and IP's got lots of bonding time. I held her a little while after for about a 1/2 hour. We got our room at about 5:00 am and I basically fell asleep in my IP's faces while they waited for their room. I slept for about 2 hours although it seemed longer. I hung out with my IP's the next day and we all took turns holding her etc.. she is so sweet and so easy!! My Dr. told me I could leave that afternoon if I was up to it but my bleeding was a little much so I decided to just take a break and stay there for the next night. She preferred it but was not going to force it. I left Friday at 11:00 am and IP's and baby were due to leave today but she got a bit of jaudice so they are keeping them an extra day.My IP's are so in love..they were so not ready and had their friends and family scrambling to get everything done while they were in the hospital. I also was not ready so I am sure work is scrambling!! Physically I feel awesome as well as mentally. As much as I love that baby girl I don't feel like she is mine at all.. IF is sweet though as when come in he calls me Mommy..lol.. like she has two mom's! It is unnecessary but it just makes me feel appreciated. While I was in the hospital it just felt like it was my sister who had a baby and I was helping them out. The staff there was VERY curious about it all..you could tell they had so many questions..LOL..

My bad

OK I am terrible at this!

October just flew by (ok so did the rest of September) but things are good! We started off October in a serious heatwave..don’t get me wrong I love the heat but not in freaking October! We started off with Shirley’s 50th Birthday Bash Car Rally! What a wonderful day it was (or at least I think it was!) the weather was fabulous (if you had AC in your car ofcourse), some people got lost but I think all in all everyone had a good time! It was a lot of planning (thanks Ross for all of your help!!) but it was all worth it for my dear Mama #2!

The weekend after that was Liam and Emma’s baptism! The weather was shit but everything went quite smoothly. The kids made us laugh in the church and we had a good time back at the house. Thanks to everyone that came and for all the lovely gifts for the kids. It was also Thanksgiving weekend so you know what that means..Turkey… man was it good!!

Work has been nuts as usual.

ON the pregnancy front everything is going good too. I will be 36 weeks on Saturday! So it is just a matter of waiting now..I will be so ready when she is I know that for sure! My IP’s have moved and are settling into their temporary digs and I can already feel some of the pressure is off my IM which is so nice..she has so much on her plate at once it is crazy! I get tired just listening about everything she has to do in a day!

I had my normal pregnancy fall last Monday. It was bad this time. Ofcourse it was a Monday morning in the pissing rain into a knee deep puddle… it was not pretty nor anything remotely graceful. I cried..I felt stupid crying but it scared the crap out of me and it freaking hurt! I ended up falling on my left knee. I had the lovely scrape almost the size of my knee cap and ofcourse all bruised to boot. I had the Dr. look at it and it is not broken but very bruised. Walking is not that bad (well it is but not because of the knee!) but going upstairs, downstairs, on and off chairs and into my car..ouch..

What else..oh yeah.. Halloween.. it went great. Kids were super tired but Shannon, Shirley and Saylie took them out with me and they were such a great help! I was having a hard enough time walking!!

My ankles are swollen pretty well all the time now.. heartburn is still bad and I can barely eat anything without puking it up. Need to talk to Dr. O about that today. But it will all be worth it when my IP’s get to see their baby for the first time!

Hope all is well with y’all!! I am hoping to get some baptism pics up soon plus we got the daycare pics back and wait till you see them!!

OHHHH I almost forgot! Liam went last Friday for his next belt in Karate! He had a little test (Which I don’t think they fail anyone..) and he got his half belt! (1/2 white and half yellow!!) We were so proud!!
